Purpose: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders, which has received many theoretical and therapeutic models in psychology literature. Each of these treatment methods are proposed based on a special theoretical approach of disorder etiology and normality criteria. Today, the studies of religious psychology deal with the special features of each religion in the subject of normal human behavior and psychological processes. Formulation of treatment models for all kinds of disorders based on the Islamic approach can be the basis for greater effectiveness and reduction of recurrence in Iranian society. Study The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Quran-based therapeutic intervention for major depressive disorder.
Materials and methods: This research was conducted based on a single-case experimental study design using multiple baselines. Two depression measurement scales, including the Quran-based Depression Diagnostic Scale and the Beck Depression Scale (BDI), were the tools used in this study, which were administered to the subjects before the intervention, after the intervention, and in the three-month follow-up period.
Findings: The results of this study on a depressed patient showed that a treatment package based on the Quran can significantly reduce the symptoms of depression. This treatment package was also able to maintain the positive effects of the treatment for at least three months after the end of the intervention. Interventions that emphasize the need to eliminate the causal roots of the disorder have more lasting effects than other interventions focused on symptoms.
Conclusion: The short-term, specificity and effectiveness of this treatment package for depression is one of its strengths compared to other interventions.
